Sir John Rhŷs (1840–1915) was a prominent Welsh scholar and Celticist who made significant contributions to the academic study of Celtic languages and culture. Born in June 1840, Rhŷs dedicated his career to higher education and research, eventually earning recognition as a fellow of the British Academy.\n\nHis academic achievements culminated in his appointment as the first-ever professor of Celtic at Oxford University. Through this pioneering role, he helped establish Celtic studies as a formal academic discipline. He served in this capacity until his death in December 1915.
