Elizabeth Margaret Jane Humphreys, born Elizabeth Margaret Jane Gollan in Inverness-shire, Scotland, was a prolific novelist who wrote during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Publishing much of her work under the well-known pseudonym "Rita," she built an extensive literary career that yielded one hundred and twenty books, plays, and essays.
In addition to her active writing career, Humphreys was a pioneering figure for female professionals in the literary world. She founded the Writers’ Club for Women, providing a dedicated space and network for female authors of her era. She passed away on January 1, 1938, leaving behind a substantial bibliography and a lasting contribution to the community of women writers.
