Ervin Rössler (also known as Erwin Rößler) was a prominent Croatian zoologist, educator, and scientific writer who made foundational contributions to the study of ornithology and fisheries in Croatia. Born in Kyjov, Moravia, in 1876, Rössler completed his schooling in Osijek before pursuing higher education at the University of Zagreb. His passion for avian research began early; by 1893, he was actively studying bird migration patterns in the Osijek region. After a brief tenure as a school teacher, he earned his doctorate in 1900 with research focused on birds.\n\nRössler's professional legacy is defined by his institutional contributions to Croatian science. In 1901, he founded the Croatian ornithological centre, establishing a structured framework for avian research in the region. The following year, he published a comprehensive list of the birds of Croatia, which served as a vital reference for regional biodiversity. His academic career progressed at the University of Zagreb, where he taught agricultural and forestry zoology, eventually becoming a professor at the Zagreb Forestry Academy. In 1910, he further advanced field research by organizing systematic bird ringing across Croatia.\n\nBeyond ornithology, Rössler was a versatile naturalist whose work spanned multiple disciplines. He conducted research on the lacertid lizards of the southern Dalmatian islands and dedicated significant effort to fish biology and pisciculture. Between 1927 and 1929, he focused on fisheries, particularly investigating the prospects of carp breeding. Rössler also contributed to the dissemination of wildlife and hunting knowledge as the editor of the hunting magazine Lovački vjesnik from 1910 to 1928. He passed away in January 1933.
