Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830–1894) was an English writer celebrated for her romantic and devotional poetry. Born into an artistic and intellectual family, she was the youngest sister of the prominent Pre-Raphaelite artist and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti. She frequently served as a model for her brother's artwork, appearing in notable paintings such as Ecce Ancilla Domini! (1850). Her early literary output was deeply influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite movement, blending rich sensory detail with profound spiritual themes.\n\nRossetti's literary reputation rests on works of remarkable emotional depth and technical skill. Among her most famous compositions is "Goblin Market," a narrative poem noted for its vibrant imagery and complex themes, as well as the poignant sonnet "Remember." She also authored the lyrics to beloved Christmas carols, including "In the Bleak Midwinter"—which was later set to music by composers such as Gustav Holst and Harold Darke—and "Love Came Down at Christmas."\n\nThroughout her life, Rossetti contended with persistent ill-health and depression. Guided by her deep religious convictions, she declined three marriage proposals and chose instead to dedicate her life to her faith and her writing. Her distinctive voice and mastery of poetic form left a lasting legacy, influencing later literary figures such as Gerard Manley Hopkins, Virginia Woolf, and Philip Larkin.
