Victor Rebengiuc is a highly influential Romanian stage and film actor, as well as a prominent civil society activist. Born in 1933, Rebengiuc joined the prestigious Bulandra Theater company in 1957, where he went on to perform in over 200 roles. He achieved his breakthrough in cinema with his performance in Liviu Ciulei's The Forest of the Hanged, establishing himself as a major figure in Romanian film. Over his career, he collaborated with many of Romania's most celebrated directors, including Radu Penciulescu, Andrei Șerban, and Lucian Pintilie.
Rebengiuc is particularly well-known for his portrayal of Ilie Moromete in Stere Gulea's 1986 film The Moromete Family. His extensive filmography also includes collaborations with director Dan Pița on films such as Tănase Scatiu and Faleze de nisip, as well as Lucian Pintilie on acclaimed works like De ce trag clopotele, Mitică?, Balanța, and Niki and Flo. His artistic contributions were frequently shaped by his experiences under Romania's communist regime, which led to several of his 1980s films being censored or banned by state officials.
Beyond his artistic achievements, Rebengiuc has been an active participant in Romania's public and political life. During the 1989 Romanian Revolution, he was among the citizens who entered the Romanian Television building to broadcast the fall of Nicolae Ceaușescu's regime. In the post-communist era, he has remained a vocal critic of communist legacies, advocated for the retrospective condemnation of the regime, and actively supported various non-governmental organizations. He is married to actress Mariana Mihuț, his longtime colleague at the Bulandra Theater.
