Amy Roberta "Berta" Ruck (1878–1978) was a highly prolific Welsh author who carved out a successful career writing popular romance fiction. Over a literary career that spanned from 1905 to 1972, Ruck published more than ninety romance novels, capturing the changing social landscapes of the twentieth century. In addition to her extensive catalog of novels, she also produced numerous short stories, an autobiography, and two volumes of memoirs that documented her long life and career.
Born in Wales, Ruck married fellow writer Oliver Onions in 1909. Her married name was Mrs. Oliver Onions until 1918, when her husband legally changed his name, after which she became known as Amy Oliver. Despite these personal name changes, she maintained her professional identity as Berta Ruck, under which she achieved widespread readership. Her work is characterized by its focus on romantic relationships, domestic life, and the evolving roles of women throughout the Edwardian era and both World Wars.
Ruck's remarkable productivity and longevity allowed her to remain an active voice in popular fiction for nearly seventy years. She passed away in 1978, shortly after her one-hundredth birthday, leaving behind a vast bibliography that reflects the shifting tastes of twentieth-century romance readers.
