Rustichello da Pisa, also known as Rusticiano, was an Italian romance writer who flourished during the late thirteenth century. Writing primarily in the Franco-Italian language, he is highly regarded for his contributions to medieval travel literature and chivalric romance. He is most famous for co-writing the autobiography of the Venetian explorer Marco Polo, titled The Travels of Marco Polo. This historic collaboration took place while both men were held as prisoners together in Genoa, allowing Rustichello to record Polo's extensive travels.
Before his famous encounter with Marco Polo, Rustichello was already an accomplished writer. He authored the Roman de Roi Artus, which is also widely known as the Romance of King Arthur or the Compilation. This text is historically significant as the earliest known Arthurian romance composed by an Italian author, reflecting the literary trends of the late medieval period.
