Mohamed Aly El-Erian is an Egyptian-American economist, businessman, and writer whose work focuses on global finance, economic policy, and investment strategies. Born in 1958, El-Erian has built a distinguished career spanning both academia and high-level corporate leadership. He has served as the President of Queens' College, Cambridge, and as the chief economic adviser at Allianz, the parent company of PIMCO, where he previously held the roles of CEO and co-chief investment officer from 2007 to 2014. Additionally, he chaired President Barack Obama's Global Development Council between 2012 and 2017.
Beyond his corporate and advisory roles, El-Erian is a prominent economic commentator and author. He has written two New York Times bestsellers, including his notable 2016 book, The Only Game in Town: Central Banks, Instability, and Avoiding the Next Collapse. His analytical writing frequently appears in major publications; he serves as a columnist for Bloomberg View and a contributing editor to the Financial Times, while also regularly contributing to Project Syndicate, Yahoo! Finance, and Foreign Policy, which named him one of its "Top 100 Global Thinkers" for four consecutive years.
El-Erian also maintains active ties to major academic institutions. In addition to his leadership at Cambridge, where he co-chairs the university's capital campaign and ran as a candidate for Chancellor in 2025, he serves as a Senior Global Fellow at the Lauder Institute and a Professor of Practice at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Since 2014, he has also contributed to the literary and business community as a judge for the Financial Times/McKinsey Business Book of the Year award.
