James Malcolm Rymer (1814–1884) was a British writer of the nineteenth century who became a prominent figure in the production of popular serial literature. He is particularly associated with the "penny dreadful" format, which captivated working-class readers of the Victorian era with sensational and gothic tales.
Rymer is best remembered as the probable co-author, alongside Thomas Peckett Prest, of two highly influential works published in 1847. He is credited with co-writing Varney the Vampire, an early and influential vampire story, as well as The String of Pearls, the famous serial that introduced the notorious fictional villain Sweeney Todd.
