The rank of Mareşal (translated as Marshal) represents the highest possible military rank within both the Turkish Land Forces and the Turkish Air Force. Serving as the direct equivalent to a field marshal in other international militaries, this prestigious title carries deep historical significance. Its origins can be traced back to the era of the Ottoman Empire, during which the equivalent rank of Mushir was bestowed upon senior military commanders by direct order of the ruling Sultan. Linguistically, the term is connected to the Latin word mariscalcus, which itself derived from Old German words meaning horse and servant.
In contemporary times, the rank of Mareşal is highly exclusive and cannot be attained through regular promotion. It can only be officially bestowed by the National Assembly of Turkey. Furthermore, this honor is strictly limited to generals who have led an army or air force to extraordinary success in active combat, resulting in a decisive victory over enemy forces. For the naval branch of the Turkish Armed Forces, the corresponding highest rank is designated as Büyük amiral.
