Sydney sandstone, also known as Hawkesbury sandstone, yellowblock, and yellow gold, is a sedimentary rock that forms the bedrock for much of the Sydney region in Australia. Deposited during the Triassic Period, likely in a freshwater delta resembling a large braided river system, the durable stone has played a crucial role in preserving local Aboriginal rock carvings and drawings.

As a highly favored building material from the late 1790s to the 1890s, the sandstone was widely used in public buildings, giving Sydney its distinctive aesthetic character. The material's geological presence in surrounding escarpments—including the Blue Mountains, Hornsby Plateau, and Woronora Plateau—has historically defined the physical boundaries, topography, and meteorological personality of the metropolitan area.
