Charles Schroeter was a German immigrant who became a highly decorated soldier in the United States military. His career in the armed forces began in 1863 and lasted for thirty-one years, concluding with his retirement in 1894. Throughout this extensive period of service, Schroeter participated in major historical conflicts of the era, including active duty during the American Civil War. Schroeter's most notable military achievements occurred during the American Indian Wars. While serving with Company G of the 8th Regiment of the United States Cavalry, he performed actions that earned him the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration awarded by the United States government. Beyond his service in the Army, Schroeter also completed a tour of duty in the United States Marine Corps, demonstrating his versatile military background.
