Frederick Gustavus Schwatka was a nineteenth-century United States Army lieutenant, physician, lawyer, and explorer. Born in 1849, Schwatka pursued an exceptionally diverse academic and professional path, securing degrees in both medicine and law alongside his military commission. Schwatka is best remembered for his extensive exploration of northern Canada and Alaska. His expeditions into these remote and challenging territories marked him as a noted figure in the history of North American exploration before his death in 1892.
