The designation Johannes Scotus, also rendered as John Scotus or John the Scot, refers to several distinct historical figures from the medieval era. These individuals primarily include notable theologians, philosophers, poets, and religious leaders who shared this name due to their Gaelic origins or associations.

Among these figures, the name is most famously associated with two major intellectual giants of the Middle Ages. The first is John Scotus Eriugena, who lived from approximately 815 to 877 and was active as an Irish theologian, philosopher, and poet. The second is Duns Scotus, another highly influential philosopher and theologian who lived from around 1266 to 1308. Both of these thinkers made profound contributions to medieval Christian philosophy.

In addition to these philosophers, the name Johannes Scotus refers to several ecclesiastical and noble figures of the period. These include John Scotus, the Bishop of Mecklenburg who lived from around 990 to 1066, and John Scotus, the Bishop of Dunkeld (who also served as the Bishop of St Andrews and died in 1203). It also refers to John of Scotland, the Earl of Huntingdon, who lived from approximately 1207 to 1237.
