Sophie Rostopchine, Countess of Ségur, was a French writer of Russian birth and origin. Born Sofiya Feodorovna Rostopchina in Saint Petersburg in 1799, she later established her life in France, where she spent her career before passing away in Paris in 1874.

She is best known today for her contributions to children's literature. Her most famous and enduring work is the novel Les Malheurs de Sophie (Sophie's Misfortunes), which was specifically written and intended for young readers.
