Robert Seymour (1798–1836) was a British illustrator and caricaturist who operated during the early nineteenth century. He achieved lasting recognition for his artistic contributions to The Pickwick Papers, the celebrated novel by Charles Dickens. Throughout his career, Seymour was well-regarded for his distinct caricatures and his ability to bring literary characters to life through his detailed illustrations.
However, Seymour's professional relationship with Dickens was fraught with tension. The collaboration ended in tragedy when, after an intense argument with Dickens over the specific illustrations for The Pickwick Papers, Seymour committed suicide on April 20, 1836. Although his life and career were cut short, his work on Dickens's early masterpiece remains a significant subject of study in the history of British illustration.
