William Sharp (1855–1905) was a prominent Scottish writer, poet, and literary biographer whose career flourished during the late Victorian era. Born in Scotland, Sharp developed a multifaceted literary practice, producing his own original poetry and critical biographies while also working extensively as an editor. Over his career, he edited and compiled the poetic works of several major literary figures, including Walter Scott, Matthew Arnold, Algernon Charles Swinburne, Eugene Lee-Hamilton, and the legendary Gaelic bard Ossian.

In 1893, Sharp embarked on a parallel literary career under the female pseudonym Fiona Macleod. This alternative identity was kept as a closely guarded secret during his lifetime, known only to a very select group of close associates. Writing as Macleod, he produced a distinct body of work that differed significantly in tone and subject from his publications under his own name. This dual creative life allowed Sharp to explore diverse stylistic and thematic territories, securing his place as a fascinating and complex figure in Scottish literary history.
