Georgiana Rose Simpson was a pioneering American philologist whose academic achievements marked a historic milestone in the history of American higher education. Born in 1865, Simpson pursued advanced studies in languages, focusing her academic career on philology. Her dedication to her field culminated in her historic doctoral work during the early twentieth century.

In 1921, Simpson successfully received her doctoral degree in German from the University of Chicago. By completing this degree, she became the first African-American woman to earn a PhD in the United States. Her achievement broke significant racial and gender barriers in academia, establishing her as a key historical figure in American philology. Simpson passed away in 1944.
