Catherine Sinclair (1800–1864) was an influential Scottish novelist and children's writer active during the nineteenth century. She distinguished herself from many of her contemporaries by departing from the heavily moralising approach that dominated children's literature and fiction during this period, offering instead a more engaging and natural style of storytelling.
In addition to her own literary contributions, Sinclair is historically notable for her keen literary insight. She is credited with discovering that the initially anonymous and highly popular Waverley Novels were written by the celebrated Scottish author Sir Walter Scott.
