Douglas Brooke Wheelton Sladen (1856–1947) was an English academic, author, and editor whose career spanned several decades and continents. Born in London, Sladen was educated at Cheltenham College and Trinity College, Oxford, where he distinguished himself academically. In the early 1880s, he migrated to Australia, where he was appointed as the first professor of history at the University of Sydney. During his time in Australia, Sladen developed a deep appreciation for the country's culture and literature, which heavily influenced his subsequent writing career.\n\nUpon returning to England, Sladen transitioned into a highly prolific career as a writer, anthologist, and travel novelist. He became a central figure in London's literary circles, organizing salons and collaborating with numerous contemporary writers. Sladen authored dozens of books, including travelogues documenting his journeys through Japan, Egypt, and Europe, as well as several novels and poetry collections. He is also remembered for compiling some of the earliest anthologies of Australian poetry, helping to introduce Australian literature to a wider British audience. Sladen spent his later years in Sussex, passing away in Hove in 1947.
