Ralph Edmund Stanley, also known as Dr. Ralph Stanley, was a seminal American bluegrass artist whose distinctive singing and banjo playing helped shape the genre. Born in 1927, Stanley embarked on his musical career in 1946 alongside his older brother, Carter Stanley. Together, they performed as the Stanley Brothers, establishing themselves as key figures in the first generation of bluegrass musicians.

Following his brother's passing, Stanley continued to perform, most notably as the leader of his band, the Clinch Mountain Boys. His traditional style, often characterized by its raw, emotive vocal delivery and driving banjo technique, earned him widespread acclaim. Throughout his long career, he also frequently collaborated with country music artists and crossed over into the country genre.

Stanley's contributions to American music were recognized with numerous prestigious honors. He was inducted into both the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Honor and the Grand Ole Opry. Posthumously, the Stanley Brothers were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2026, cementing his legacy as a cornerstone of American roots music.
