Alicia Elsbeth Stallings, writing as A. E. Stallings, is an American poet, translator, and essayist known for her mastery of traditional form and her deep engagement with classical literature. Born in 1968, she studied classics and has spent much of her career bridging ancient themes with modern sensibilities. She has published several major collections of original poetry, including her debut Archaic Smile (1999), followed by Hapax (2006), Olives (2012), Like (2018), and the compilation This Afterlife (2022).
Beyond her original verse, Stallings has earned widespread acclaim for her verse translations of ancient Greek and Roman works. Her translations of Lucretius's De Rerum Natura (The Nature of Things) and Hesiod's Works and Days were both published by Penguin Classics. She has also translated the Batrachomyomachia (The Battle of the Frogs and the Mice), showcasing her ability to bring ancient humor and philosophy to contemporary readers.
Stallings's literary achievements have been recognized with numerous prestigious awards and fellowships. She is a recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Willis Barnstone Translation Prize. Additionally, her work has been named a finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry and the National Book Critics Circle Award. A Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, Stallings was named the University of Oxford's 47th Professor of Poetry in June 2023.
