Everett Smith Beneke was an American medical mycologist and educator who dedicated his career to the study of fungi and their impact on human health. Born in 1918, Beneke established himself as a prominent figure in microbiology, spending nearly four decades as a professor at Michigan State University from 1948 to 1987. Throughout his long academic tenure, he focused on educating future scientists and advancing research in the specialized field of human mycoses, contributing valuable knowledge to the understanding of fungal infections.
Beyond his university teaching and research, Beneke held significant leadership roles within the broader scientific and medical communities. Notably, he served as the chair of the American Board of Bioanalysis for over thirty-five years, from 1968 to 2004. His work in this capacity helped shape professional standards and practices in bioanalysis. After concluding his long career in academia and administration, he resided in Florida, where he passed away in 2010 at the age of ninety-one.
