Gerald Allan Sohl Sr., professionally known as Jerry Sohl, was an American television scriptwriter and science fiction author whose career spanned several decades of the twentieth century. Born in 1913, Sohl became a versatile writer, contributing to some of the most influential television programs of his era while also maintaining a prolific output as a novelist and nonfiction writer.\n\nSohl is particularly remembered for his contributions to classic science fiction and suspense television. He penned scripts for iconic series such as The Outer Limits, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and Star Trek: The Original Series, for which he sometimes utilized the pseudonym 'Nathan Butler.' Additionally, Sohl worked as a ghostwriter for Charles Beaumont, contributing scripts to The Twilight Zone.\n\nIn addition to his extensive television portfolio, Sohl was a dedicated novelist who published more than twenty books over the course of his career. He also wrote screenplays for feature films and branched into nonfiction writing, publishing titles such as Underhanded Chess and Underhanded Bridge in 1973.
