Samuel Spewack was a twentieth-century dramatist and director who is best known for his extensive collaborative work with his wife, Bella Spewack. Born on September 16, 1899, in Bachmut, Ukraine, Spewack eventually relocated to the United States. He spent his formative years in New York City, where he attended Stuyvesant High School. Following his secondary education, he enrolled at Columbia College, where he successfully completed his studies and received his degree.
Throughout his professional career, Spewack worked in tandem with Bella Spewack as a dedicated writing team. Together, the duo developed numerous theatrical scripts and plays. Beyond his primary responsibilities as a co-writer, Samuel Spewack also distinguished himself by directing many of the theatrical productions that he and his wife created. This dual capacity as both a writer and a director allowed him to exert a significant influence on the staging and realization of their joint literary output until his death on October 14, 1971.
