Friedrich Spielhagen, born on February 24, 1829, was a prominent German novelist, literary theorist, and translator whose career spanned the latter half of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. Before establishing himself in the literary world, Spielhagen spent his early twenties exploring a variety of different career paths. It was not until he reached the age of twenty-five that he began to focus his professional efforts on writing and translating, initiating a productive period of literary output.

Over the course of his career, Spielhagen became recognized for his contributions to German prose and literary theory. His most famous and widely known novel is Sturmflut. In addition to his success within Germany, Spielhagen's work found an international audience; his novel In Reih' und Glied was particularly well-received and achieved substantial success in Russia. Alongside his novelistic endeavors, Spielhagen worked extensively as a translator and formulated theories on literature, remaining an active figure in the literary community until his death on February 25, 1911.
