Roger Thomas Staubach, nicknamed "Captain America" and "Roger the Dodger," is a former American professional football quarterback who played eleven seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. Born in 1942, Staubach first gained national prominence at the United States Naval Academy, where he played college football for the Navy Midshipmen and won the prestigious Heisman Trophy in 1963. Following his graduation, he fulfilled his military service commitment in the United States Navy, which included a tour of duty during the Vietnam War.
Staubach joined the Dallas Cowboys in 1969, eventually becoming the franchise's starting quarterback. Throughout his eleven-year career, he led the Cowboys to five Super Bowl appearances, securing victories in Super Bowl VI and Super Bowl XII. He was named the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl VI, making him the first of only four players to win both the Heisman Trophy and a Super Bowl MVP award. A six-time Pro Bowl selection, Staubach was later inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, remaining the only quarterback to achieve both the Heisman and Hall of Fame honors.
Following his retirement from professional football, Staubach transitioned into a highly successful business career. He founded The Staubach Group, a commercial real estate firm that he grew and eventually sold to Jones Lang LaSalle in 2008. He served as the executive chairman of the Americas region for the company until his retirement in 2018. In recognition of his athletic and civic contributions, Staubach was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2018.
