Sir John Strathearn Hendrie was a prominent Canadian businessman, military officer, and politician who served as the 11th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. Born in Hamilton, Canada West, in 1857, Hendrie was educated at Upper Canada College before embarking on a career as a railway contractor and promoter of the Hamilton Bridge Works.\n\nHendrie's political career began in municipal politics, serving as the Mayor of Hamilton from 1901 to 1902. He subsequently transitioned to provincial politics, serving as a Member of Provincial Parliament from 1902 to 1914. During this tenure, he held significant roles, including Minister without Portfolio and Hydro-Electric Commissioner. Alongside his civic duties, Hendrie maintained a long-standing military involvement, joining the Hamilton Field Artillery in 1883 and eventually commanding the 2nd Brigade of the Canadian Field Artillery.\n\nIn 1914, Hendrie was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, a position he held until 1919. His term was heavily defined by World War I, during which he dedicated much of his time to supporting the war effort and hosting military personnel and dignitaries. Notably, he was the only Ontario viceroy to reside in two different Government Houses, including Chorley Park. Knighted in 1915, Hendrie passed away in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1923.
