Walter Patrick Lang, Jr. (May 31, 1940 – April 5, 2023) was an American author, commentator on Middle Eastern affairs, and retired United States Army officer. Throughout his career, Lang bridged the worlds of military service, intelligence analysis, and writing, offering expert commentary on global security and regional politics.\n\nAfter completing his uniformed military service, during which he achieved the rank of colonel, Lang transitioned into high-level civilian roles within the United States defense establishment. In these capacities, he led critical intelligence analysis efforts focusing on the Middle East and South Asia for the Department of Defense. His responsibilities also extended to overseeing worldwide human intelligence (HUMINT) activities, serving in a civilian position equivalent in rank to a lieutenant general.\n\nIn addition to his official military and government service, Lang worked as a private intelligence analyst and shared his insights as an author and commentator.
