Gordon Thomas Stuart was a Canadian-born Welsh portrait artist who achieved recognition for his depictions of prominent cultural and political figures. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Stuart studied his craft at the Ontario College of Art and Design. His early life was marked by military service, as he served in the Canadian Army during the Second World War. Following the war, he returned to Canada before embarking on a European journey that led him to live in Paris and London, eventually settling permanently in Wales.
Stuart is most famous for his portraits of the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, whom he met in 1953. During their acquaintance, Stuart completed an oil sketch and three oil paintings of Thomas. These works have since been preserved in notable collections, including the National Gallery of Art in London, the State University of New York at Buffalo, and Thomas's home in Uplands.
Beyond his celebrated depictions of Dylan Thomas, Stuart's portfolio includes portraits of several other high-profile individuals. He painted United States President Jimmy Carter, Welsh landscape painter Sir Kyffin Williams, Dylan Thomas's daughter Aeronwy Thomas, record producer Sir George Martin, and Welsh rugby player Cliff Morgan.
