Born on May 17, 1805, he was the second son of Anthony Surtees of Hamsterley Hall, belonging to an old County Durham family. Over his career, he established himself as a distinctive voice in nineteenth-century literature, combining his editorial work with a passion for sporting themes.

Surtees is best remembered for creating the character of Jorrocks, a vulgar but good-natured cockney grocer with a love for sporting pursuits. Through this popular character, Surtees explored the humor and social dynamics of his era. He passed away on March 16, 1864, leaving a lasting legacy in the genre of English sporting fiction.
