Lee Upton is an American poet, fiction writer, and literary critic. Born on June 2, 1953, in St. Johns, Michigan, she has established a career spanning multiple literary genres, combining creative writing with academic scholarship.

Upton's educational background is extensive, beginning with a Bachelor of Arts in journalism from Michigan State University. She went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts from the Program for Poets & Writers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and subsequently completed a PhD in English literature at the State University of New York at Binghamton.
