Sir Frank Athelstane Swettenham was a prominent British colonial administrator who played a key role in the British administration of Malaya during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in March 1850, Swettenham dedicated much of his career to colonial governance, ultimately achieving a historic administrative milestone in the region.\n\nHis most notable appointment was serving as the very first Resident-General of the Federated Malay States. In this administrative role, which he held from July 1896 until November 1901, Swettenham was responsible for bringing the Malay states of Selangor, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, and Pahang together. This unification established a centralized administration based in Kuala Lumpur, marking a significant period in the colonial history of the Malay Peninsula.\n\nIn addition to his administrative career, Swettenham was a man of varied personal interests and artistic pursuits. He was an amateur painter and photographer, capturing visual elements of his era, and also spent time as an antique collector. Swettenham passed away in June 1946.
