Charles Roland Tanner was an American science fiction and fantasy writer who was active primarily during the late 1930s and early 1940s. Born in 1896, Tanner made his literary debut in 1930 with the publication of his short story "The Color of Space" in the magazine Science Wonder Stories. This initial foray into speculative fiction marked the beginning of a modest but memorable career in the early pulp science fiction scene.\n\nTanner is most widely recognized for his Tumithak series, which follows the adventures of a heroic protagonist navigating a subterranean world. During his lifetime, Tanner published three stories in this cycle: "Tumithak of the Corridors," "Tumithak in Shawm," and "Tumithak and the Towers of Fire." A fourth installment, titled "Tumithak and the Ancient Word," was eventually published posthumously in 2005, cementing the enduring appeal of his fictional universe.\n\nDespite his creative output, Tanner's life was marked by significant personal hardships, particularly during the Great Depression. During this economically devastating period, he suffered the loss of one of his three children, and his wife endured a prolonged hospitalization due to tuberculosis. Tanner passed away in 1974, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneering contributor to early American science fiction.
