Bayard Taylor (1825–1878) was a prominent American literary figure who built a multifaceted career as a poet, literary critic, translator, and travel author. He achieved extraordinary popularity during his lifetime, particularly as a poet. On one notable occasion, Taylor drew a crowd of more than 4,000 people to a poetry reading, establishing an attendance record that remained unbroken for eighty-five years.\n\nIn addition to his celebrated poetry, Taylor was widely recognized for his travelogues, which found a large and enthusiastic readership in both the United States and Great Britain.
