George McCall Theal was a highly prolific and influential historian, archivist, and genealogist who shaped the historical narrative of South Africa during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, in 1837, he eventually immigrated to South Africa, where he dedicated his life to documenting the region's complex colonial past.\n\nAs an archivist, Theal was instrumental in preserving and organizing official colonial records. He served as the Keeper of the Archives for the Cape Colony, producing massive compilations of historical documents that became essential resources for subsequent generations of researchers. His work was characterized by an immense volume of output, covering genealogical studies and comprehensive histories of the region.\n\nAlthough his historical interpretations reflected the colonial biases of his time, Theal's extensive preservation efforts and multi-volume publications established him as a foundational figure in South African historiography. He died in Wynberg, Cape Town, in 1919.
