Born in 1875, Gull developed a diverse writing career that spanned journalism and popular fiction, utilizing multiple pen names to publish his extensive body of work.

Gull's most significant literary success came in 1903 with the publication of When It Was Dark: The Story of A Great Conspiracy, a novel that remains his best-known contribution to English literature. Throughout his career, he also published works under his real name, C. Ranger Gull, as well as the pseudonym Leonard Cresswell Ingleby, before his death in January 1923.
