Sigrid Undset was a prominent Danish-born Norwegian novelist who achieved international acclaim for her historical fiction. Born in Denmark in 1882 and raised in Norway, Undset began her literary career with the publication of her first historical novels in 1907. Her writing deeply explored the complexities of human relationships, faith, and societal structures, particularly within historical contexts.\n\nUndset's masterpiece is Kristin Lavransdatter, a monumental trilogy published between 1920 and 1922. Set in medieval Norway, the work follows the life of its eponymous protagonist from her childhood through her marriage, motherhood, and eventual death. Renowned for its psychological depth and meticulous historical accuracy, the trilogy cemented Undset's reputation and contributed significantly to her receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1928.\n\nDuring World War II, Undset was a vocal opponent of Nazi Germany. Following the German invasion and occupation of Norway in 1940, she was forced to flee her home and seek refuge in the United States. Throughout the war, she continued to speak out against the occupation. She returned to Norway in 1945 after the conclusion of the conflict in Europe, where she lived until her death in 1949.
