George Allen Upward was a British poet, lawyer, politician, and teacher whose diverse career spanned multiple disciplines. Born in Worcester on September 20, 1863, to parents George and Mary Upward, he developed a professional life that bridged the analytical world of law and politics with the creative realms of education and creative writing.
Upward's most notable literary contribution lies in his connection to the early twentieth-century avant-garde. His poetry was featured in Des Imagistes, the seminal 1914 anthology edited by Ezra Pound that served as the first collective publication of the Imagist movement. Through this inclusion, Upward became associated with some of the most influential modernist figures of the pre-war era.
Beyond his own writing and professional endeavors, Upward belonged to a family with notable literary ties, serving as a first cousin once removed to the novelist Edward Upward. He passed away on November 17, 1926, in Wimborne, and was survived by his elder sister, Mary Edith Upward.
