Carl Clinton Van Doren was an influential American literary critic and biographer who played a significant role in shaping the study and appreciation of American literature during the first half of the twentieth century. Born in 1885, he belonged to a distinguished intellectual family; his brother Mark Van Doren was a celebrated critic and teacher, and his nephew Charles Van Doren would later become a well-known academic figure.

Van Doren's most celebrated achievement was his monumental biography, Benjamin Franklin, published in 1938. The meticulously researched and highly readable work earned him the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography in 1939. Through this and other works, Van Doren sought to bring key historical figures to life with both scholarly rigor and accessible prose, helping to define the standards of modern American biographical writing.

In addition to his biographical work, Van Doren was a dedicated editor and educator who worked tirelessly to elevate the status of American letters. He championed domestic writers and historical narratives at a time when American literature was still fighting for academic recognition. He passed away in 1950, leaving behind a lasting legacy as one of the preeminent literary advocates of his generation.
