John Holbrook Vance, writing primarily as Jack Vance, was a highly influential American author who worked across the genres of science fiction, fantasy, and mystery. Born in 1916, Vance began his career publishing short stories in science fiction magazines before transitioning to longer novellas and novels. Over a career spanning several decades, his distinctive voice and imaginative world-building earned him a reputation as one of the most unique figures in speculative fiction. He also wrote mystery novels under various pen names, including the collective pseudonym Ellery Queen.
Vance's work is celebrated for its rich, baroque language, complex societies, and dry wit. Among his most acclaimed works are the Hugo Award-winning novellas The Dragon Masters (1963) and The Last Castle (1967), the latter of which also secured a Nebula Award. His fantasy writing reached a peak with the Lyonesse trilogy, particularly Lyonesse: Madouc, which won the World Fantasy Award in 1990. Beyond speculative fiction, Vance demonstrated his versatility by winning an Edgar Award for his 1961 mystery novel, The Man in the Cage, and later published a well-received memoir, This Is Me, Jack Vance!, in 2010.
Throughout his lifetime, Vance received extensive industry recognition. He was named the 15th Grand Master by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America in 1997 and was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2001. His complete bibliography was preserved in a massive 44-volume Integral Edition, cementing his legacy. Described by The New York Times Magazine as "one of American literature's most distinctive and undervalued voices," Vance continued writing until late in life, passing away in Oakland, California, in 2013 at the age of 96.
