Herbert Dickinson Ward was an American author and journalist active during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in Waltham, Massachusetts, on June 29, 1861, he was the son of William Hayes Ward. He received his early education at Phillips Academy in Andover, graduating in 1880, and subsequently completed his higher education at Amherst College, graduating in 1884.

Following his academic studies, Ward dedicated himself to a career in writing, contributing extensively to various newspapers and periodicals of his era. On October 20, 1888, he married the noted writer Elizabeth Stuart Phelps. Ward continued his literary and journalistic endeavors throughout his life, passing away on June 27, 1932.
