Alexander Raban Waugh was a British novelist who wrote during the twentieth century. Born in 1898, he was part of a prominent literary family. He was the son of Arthur Waugh, who was well-known as an author, literary critic, and publisher. Alec Waugh was also the elder brother of the famous novelist Evelyn Waugh, and the uncle of the writer Auberon Waugh. Throughout his life, Waugh's personal and professional circles were deeply connected to the literary world. He was married three times, often to individuals with their own literary connections. His first marriage was to Barbara Jacobs, the daughter of the established writer William Wymark Jacobs. Following his second marriage to Joan Chirnside, he married his third wife, Virginia Sorenson, who was herself an acclaimed writer and the recipient of the Newbery Medal for her book Miracles on Maple Hill. Waugh passed away in 1981.
