Helen Wells (1910–1986) was a writer of young adult fiction, best known for her extensive contributions to popular mid-20th-century book series. Her most famous creation was the Cherry Ames series, which focused on the career and adventures of a young nurse. Wells was instrumental in shaping the series, writing the first seven volumes (volumes one through seven) and establishing the character's initial appeal. After a hiatus, she returned to the series to write volumes seventeen through twenty-seven, cementing her legacy as the primary voice behind the beloved character.
Beyond her work with Cherry Ames, Wells also contributed significantly to another popular series for young teens featuring the character Vicki Barr. Wells authored the first four books in the Vicki Barr series, setting the tone for the flight stewardess's adventures, and she is also credited as the possible author of the final volume in that series. Through these two major series, Wells left a lasting mark on mid-century juvenile series fiction.
