George Weston was an American-born Canadian businessman and entrepreneur who founded George Weston Limited, which became a major force in the food processing and distribution industry. Born in 1864, Weston entered the workforce at the age of twelve, beginning his career as a baker's apprentice in Toronto. Over the years, he gained valuable experience within the Canadian bread industry, eventually transitioning from his apprenticeship to working as a bread route salesman. His early hands-on experience in the trade laid the foundation for his later success as an independent business owner and industry leader.
Beyond his achievements in the commercial baking sector, Weston was deeply involved in his community and local governance. He was a Methodist who also dedicated himself to public service, serving for four years as an alderman on the Toronto City Council. Through his municipal political career and his business endeavors, Weston became a notable figure in Toronto's late nineteenth and early twentieth-century development. He passed away in April 1924, leaving a legacy defined by his rise from a young apprentice to a prominent Canadian business founder.
