George John Whyte-Melville was a nineteenth-century Scottish novelist and poet whose literary career was closely associated with his interest in field sports. Born in June 1821, he became well-known for incorporating these athletic and outdoor themes into his creative writing, capturing a specific niche of Victorian-era sporting life.\n\nIn the mid-1850s, Whyte-Melville temporarily paused his active writing career to participate in the Crimean War. During this conflict, he served as an officer of the Turkish irregular cavalry. Following his military service, he returned to his civilian life and writing, continuing his work until his death in December 1878.
