Elaine Welteroth is an American journalist, editor, author, and television host who has made significant contributions to media representation and youth-focused journalism. She rose to prominence through her work at Condé Nast, particularly at Teen Vogue, where she became the beauty director in 2012, making her the first person of African-American heritage to hold that position. In April 2016, she was appointed editor-in-chief of the publication. At age 29, she was the second youngest editor in Condé Nast's history and only the second African-American editor-in-chief in the company's 107-year history.
During her tenure at Teen Vogue, Welteroth spearheaded a major editorial shift, expanding the magazine's coverage beyond fashion and beauty to include politics, social justice, and civic engagement. This pivot was especially prominent during the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Under her leadership, the brand also expanded its digital footprint, launching its first YouTube channel to address diverse topics ranging from campus style to cultural appropriation. She remained with the publication until resigning in January 2018, shortly after the release of the magazine's final print edition.
Following her departure from Condé Nast, Welteroth transitioned into television and book publishing. She joined the Bravo reality television series Project Runway as a judge in late 2018. In June 2019, she published her memoir, More Than Enough: Claiming Space for Who You Are (No Matter What They Say), which explores her career journey, identity, and lessons on self-advocacy.
