Russell Robert Winterbotham (1904–1971) was an American writer who contributed extensively to mid-twentieth-century genre fiction. Born in Salina, Kansas, Winterbotham built a diverse writing career that spanned science fiction, westerns, and crime stories. Alongside his creative writing, he maintained a long-term career as a professional fiction editor for the Scripps-Howard NEA news service, balancing his editorial duties with a prolific output of novels, short stories, and comic scripts.\n\nWriting under his own name as well as various pseudonyms, Winterbotham was highly adaptable. Under the pen name "J. Harvey Bond," he authored crime fiction and the science fiction novel The Other World, while using the pseudonym "Franklin Hadley" for other science fiction endeavors. He was also known for his contributions to popular culture through instructional pamphlets and several Big Little Books, which were highly popular illustrated books during the era.\n\nIn addition to prose, Winterbotham made significant contributions to the comic strip medium. He wrote scripts for Fred Harman's famous western comic Red Ryder and authored the newspaper comic strip Chris Welkin, Planeteer. He passed away in 1971 in Bay Village, Ohio, leaving behind a legacy as a versatile storyteller who thrived across multiple popular mediums.
