Theodore Woolsey Winthrop was a nineteenth-century writer, lawyer, and world traveler. Born in 1828, he engaged in diverse professional pursuits, combining his legal background and literary interests with extensive travels throughout his life.

Following the outbreak of the American Civil War, Winthrop served as a Major in the military. He was killed in action in June 1861, becoming one of the very first Union officers to die in the line of duty during the conflict.
