Mildred Augustine Wirt Benson was an American journalist and prolific author of children's literature, best known for her foundational contributions to the iconic Nancy Drew mystery series. Writing under the Stratemeyer Syndicate's collective pseudonym Carolyn Keene, Benson authored 23 of the first 30 Nancy Drew novels published between 1929 and 1953. Her writing was instrumental in defining the adventurous, independent, and daring personality of the famous young detective, which helped make the series an enduring commercial success. Born in 1905, Benson maintained a dual career in creative writing and journalism. Beyond her ghostwriting work for the Stratemeyer Syndicate, she published numerous children's books under her own name and other pseudonyms, while also working for decades as a journalist. Her work on the Nancy Drew series established a new archetype for young female protagonists in American popular culture, blending mystery, resourcefulness, and determination. She continued writing and working in journalism until her death in 2002.
